Introduced from 1898 these coaches were originally used for Metropolitan mainline services. They were displaced on this work by more modern coaches from 1910. Some were converted to motor coaches, others worked with saloon stock motors. They were withdrawn from service in the early 1930’s except for two 3-coach push/pull sets for the Chesham branch which they served from 1941 until electrification in 1960. Four coaches remain on the Bluebell Railway and have recently been used on Steam on the Underground rail tours.
